Recorded this with my cousin last night. He plays electric guitar and we were messing around with some of the guitar effects on my H4n recorder.

Hey Guys, I’m back in the USA. I’m still not settled in well, but should be soon. I wanted to share a video from a friend I met on youtube. He has a very interesting style of playing banjo. Please check out his channel.

    • Your friend made a good interesting video there Tim, it just shows there are many ways to make music with the banjo.

    • This guy sounds a lot like Stringbean’s style of playing. I love Stringbean and I love Dmbanjo. Do you have any idea how they create that distinctive sound? Looks like some form of clawhammer/frailing but I can’t quite get it.

    • welcome back to the USA. I look forward to your next video.

    • Interesting ”hybrid”. Looks like a combination of a roll with a clawhammer rake thrown in. I’ve seen that a few times, it works quite well, and I like it!
The ”purists” may have a fit, but I say he is playing his style perfectly………

    • This is just delightful! Great job! Bravo!

It’s a worthy and interesting challenge. I’m listening to this song for the first time. I’m going to avoid listening to the string band version for now. The first thing I hear is the drum beat and it’s real strong on the back beat (2s & 4s) so I will focus on that aspect and not pay so much attention to what the guitar is doing. I will try…[Read more]

Yeah, I agree with everything you said. Some songs even if in 4/4 just won’t sound quite right with straight frailing. You can be creative and come up with something that sort of works. Another option is to break out of frailing and strum. Yet another option is to take artistic license and alter the arrangement to fit your style. You should…[Read more]

I find the distractions to be good practice. When I’m sitting around playing, my daughter will pop in and ask a question. If I can answer her without missing a beat while playing a break then I know I’ve got the tune down pretty good.

An example of using Carter style melody in two octaves in G

  • Tim Davis posted a new activity comment 4 months, 1 week ago

Yes. This is the idea. And you’ll see Boil them cabbage works exactly like you said. You can play hammer-ons to liven it up a little. The songs in G will transfer really well too because the treble strings are basically tuned the same way.

Lovely! I think this one would sound great with your friend accompanying on guitar. Have you tried it yet?

Here’s a tutorial video where I talk about similarities between frailing banjo and Carter style guitar melody.

    • hey tim. i was just thinking more about this. bum ditty is essentially the same thing as a bass note plus a down-up strum. i wonder if you could take any frailing tab and directly transpose it to guitar. i’m not at home right now to try but i just had a look at boil them cabbage down in C and it seems like the whole thing can be played with…[Read more]

I thought about a backup vocal, but couldn’t find a good spot on this song. As for your other request, it just doesn’t sound right to me.

this seems much more natural than using that stick to fret the strings. I would watch out for left wrist problems. It seems like a strange angle that could be an injury waiting to happen.

In 2010, I set the goal to seek out people to play with and I accomplished it making contacts with 3 different groups of people. I started 2011 practicing in a bluegrass band every week. I learned a lot from the experience and performed with them a few times, but eventually we decided to part ways. In 2012, I will return to America. So my…[Read more]
