Song Of The Month 4 months agoYikes it’s the 17th and I never even did a SOTM this month. Sorry

Song Of The Month 5 months, 1 week agoA medley of two traditional Christmas tunes, with a bonus of Old Joe Clark with alternate lyrics:
I went down to Santa’s House, found him sick in bed
Run my fingers down his throat, pulled out a chicken head
Ho Ho Ho Santa Claus, Ho Ho Ho I Say
Ho Ho Ho Santa Claus, I’m a going away

Song Of The Month 5 months, 3 weeks agoOk so here is a book with 13 two-finger banjo songs in it from a friend of mine – Nathan. He’s kindly made this available for free and it’s fun stuff.

Song Of The Month 5 months, 3 weeks agoOk so for December the SONG OF THE MONTH is …. any Christmas tune you like.
I think this will be fun because hopefully we will hear a wide variety of tunes. If possible please post a chord breakdown, tab, or something about the song you are playing for those who would like to try to learn them.
Have fun

Song Of The Month 5 months, 3 weeks agoOk who has ideas for December SOTM? I think a Christmas tune is in order.
-
”Joy To The World” ”Silent Night” or ”Greensleeves” are pretty good. It’s about time to start re learning these songs again. I have to do it every year.
-
Yep, keep the suggestions coming. We’ll pick something on the first. I’ll try and get some tabs for whatever we pick too and hopefully a bunch can learn the song during the month.
-
-
”I saw three ships” nice simple tune, goes well with frailing I think.

Song Of The Month 6 months agoI played my banjo today for the first time in about 3 weeks. Probably the longest time I’ve spent without playing it since I started. I’ll make a video of this when I have time to get the camera out.

not remembering the words is the fun part of it all IMO. LOL. Sounded great!
-
sounded great ! Just listened to it super quiet with my ear up to the speakers because someone else in the same room is watching their fave TV show, but I’ll give a proper listen later. It’s nice when the train speeds up, I hope to play this some day!
-
Next time, make them turn down their TV show and put their ear up to the speaker ^^
The speeding up was not intentional. I’m really out of practice on banjo. Been playing guitar nonstop.

Song Of The Month 6 months agoHi all. I have been enjoying the site for the past few weeks, and finally got around to signing up and recording something to post. I have been playing for a little over a year now, and this my first recording. It is a simple version of New River Train — no melody notes. However, I added a backing organ, upright bass, and drums using the…[Read more]

Song Of The Month 6 months, 1 week agoI got an external ear infection and it knocked me for a loop. My poor old ear swelled up twice it’s size. Needless to say with the pain and the funky looking ear, I couldn’t do any videos this week. I figured that I would re-mix New River Train and this time, mix in a very simple tablature file in with it.
-
excellent format, kelly! you should do this with all of your videos. thanks for all the work you put in to this.
-
Joel, Thanks, but that would be way too labor intensive and wouldn’t really help anyone. If you work your way through two or three of my videos, then you never have to look at tab again. I don’t mind tab, but if you show it for every song, then no one can learn. Check out some of the videos and experiment. You can see where the left hand is and…[Read more]

Song Of The Month 6 months, 1 week agoCouldn’t pass this one up! This in Double D rather than out of Open G as I had some things I wanted to try.
-
Wonderful addition Arthur, love that arrangement!
-
Thanks, it’s all mine. I like plaing in double C/D because you can run from the second to the fourth or fourth to second or from either to the middle or climb either string to the one below it to get the double stop that I like. (Kinda finding what sounds good to me.)
-
-
Thanks Arthur. Your banjo sounds fantastic, such wonderful tone. Singing in D seems to suit you very well too.
-
Thanks. The banjo is a Mike Ramsey Dobson with the big brass fender inside which sits on a huge round brass hoop. Recently I got a skin head for it and that seems to have made the tone richer. The thing has always had a nice mid range. As for pitch; recently things have seemed to have fallen into place in that department. I can’t explain it.
-
-
Also, I notice you are using a different chord progression and melody than I have heard for this. You are using the Going Down the road feeling bad chord progression where I’ve usually heard this song using the She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain chord progression. Was this your idea or have you heard it this way somewhere? It sounds good by…[Read more]

No, it’s just my coruption of what I started with. Right when I hear it I can duplicate it but ten minutes later I can’t and I worked this up in the office on my lunch break and what came out is what came out.

sounds great! nice pickin’.

Arthur, I love that double D sound! Great job!

Song Of The Month 6 months, 1 week agoNote to self – Figure out how to GLUE a pick to your fingers while playing guitar so you don’t drop it 100 times!!! LOL
NRT collab with myself. Banjo, guitar, vocal. Some synch issues but pretty ok to me!
