Banjo Bandits 2 weeks, 1 day agowhite house blues – the ballad bluegrass variation.
i’ve been fooling around the past week with some three finger picking. i love to listen to bluegrass scruggs style banjo but always thought it would be impossible. it’s not as hard as you might think. it just takes practice. it took me at least three months or more to get the frailing…[Read more]

Banjo Bandits 2 weeks, 2 days agohere’s two excellent sources for figuring out melodies:
toneway’s book and site: http://toneway.com/products/get-started-core-songs there’s a section in the book about picking patterns which you’ll need for figuring out melodies. they also have an extra download page where you can download about 50 or so songs that have the melody…[Read more]

woops…i meant to post that as a reply to patrick goff.

Thanks Joel, just looked at the toneway site and it looks impressive. The book looks really good and being able to purchase the cd’s with most of my favorites are a plus for learning/entertainment.
-
sure, man. the toneway stuff is amazing. if you take the time to learn the picking patterns and study the part about finding the correct key to sing in – it is worth every cent. i also bought the discs with every MP3 on them. excellent stuff and like you said, all my favorite tunes!

Banjo Bandits 2 weeks, 6 days agoWanted to know what the board’s opinion was on using a pick on the frailing hand.Nail is not breaking, just wanted to get a sharper sound. Also, anyone have a good source for frailing tabs, having a hard time trying to figure out the melodies like most beginners i assume. Thanks in advance
-
One of things I disliked most about Scruggs-style was having to wear finger picks. It is SOOOO nice not to have to carry around another piece of gear – just pick up the instument and go! Be sure and experiment with different nail lengths. I’ve found that if my nail comes JUST to the end of my finger it works best for me (with nail held…[Read more]

I keep my nails pretty short, on up front the tip of the finger, perhaps that is why i can’t get a sharp sound. The index finger is louder, but i am much slower with the index and limited with my reach, so i prefer the middle. I got a savannah (170 i believe) with light gauge strings.Strings are about 9 months old, may have them change in the…[Read more]

Hey Patrick – I’ve tried the Fred Kelly Freedom Pick for when my nail breaks or I need to play loud. It works great. Just google it and I bet you’ll find it for sale. The best resource I can think of is Mike Iverson’s site for beginner tabs – http://www.bluesageband.com/Tabs.html

Thanks Mandy, I’ll look into both!

I’ve created a NEW FORUM. Just click on the FORUMS link on the right side of any page. You’ll have to register (use your same username and password from here if you want). Just wanted to have working forums available for us if anyone would like to use them. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Oh and I named the forums Kitchen Pickin because…[Read more]

maybe I’m dense, but I don’t see a signin link in the Kitchen Pickin forum. How do you envision that forum being distinct from this one? What do you want posted here or there? How is a forum different than a group?
-
Hey Bentley – as for a singing forum I haven’t set much up yet, just seeing if it’s something anyone is interested in. As far as being distinct from BB here’s how I see it. Forums are for discussions, BB is for music video clips and audio clips. Folks don’t really come on here much for asking questions or discussing and I think (could very…[Read more]

Mandy, thanks for letting us all know how the structure will work…. looks good! But, I still can’t find a sign in button for the forums (I’m using FireFox)
-
Oh, just click on START DISCUSSION and it will let you sign up. Let me know if you have any trouble with that. Thanks

That is so cool Mandy! I love it! I wish I could learn to do the split videos like that and add audio. My windows crashed last year now I’m using Ubuntu, and I’ve only recently learned to do basic video editing with one of the video editors.
-
Very well done Mandy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The title screen came from my iMovie program.

Other Instruments 3 weeks, 6 days agoI’m playing my little tenor guitar doohicky I made in this video. I call it a Guitenor…. LOL!. Anyway… one of my favorite old tunes…… When we march through.
-
Can you make me a banguitdulci ?? Haha. All kidding aside, love your music thanks for sharing it here Bobby.
Really like that guitar break in there. -
LOL! Thanks Mandy!
The older gentleman that picked the break out is Herman Matney. He was crippled as a child with polio. He’s kinda our mentor. Although he’s getting old now and with him already having a disability it’s getting harder for him to get around. He walks with braces on his legs, but he just can’t go too far anymore. We sure miss…[Read more]

Other Instruments 3 weeks, 6 days agoHere’ I’m playing a little instrument I made called a ”Strumdrop”. It has 3 strings tuned to open G and diatonic fretted like a dulcimer. We messed up several times…. but we still had fun.
-
WOW. Beautiful instrument and nicely played. Love the F holes!!!
-
Nice sounding strumdrop! Hey we all mess up, it’s all in fun don’t worry.
-
Thanks Bentley and Mandy. I gave that one away, but I’m gonna make me another one real soon. I’m thinking about making it a 4 string with the 4th string being like the 5th string on a banjo. Be kinda different anyway.
